The purposes of this interactive resource are to:

  • illustrate what can be learned from Hong Kong schools which have developed strong imaginative approaches to self-evaluation
  • offer guidance on embedding self-evaluation in the day-to-day work of the school and classroom
  • show how effective self-evaluation prepares schools well for external review
  • give access to tools of self-evaluation which are school and teacher friendly
  • minimise preparation for external school review and remove anxiety
  • illustrate how other countries handle self-evaluation and external review; and
  • provide useful resource materials for school-based staff development activities to enhance SSE in schools

How To use This Resource

This resource may be used in a wide variety of ways and by different people, for example:

  • an individual (e.g. teacher, SMC member,  PTA member) either as a source of information or used more reflectively and methodically, undertaking some suggested activity;
     
  • a pair or small group going through the resource together, discussing issues and engaging in some of the suggested activities;

  • a School Improvement Team or Staff Development Team working through the resource to inform themselves, to help planning or to consider how to use the resource most effectively with colleagues; 

  • a whole staff being led through an activity, or series of activities, to deepen understanding of SSE or to prepare for ESR.
     

  1. BROWSING
    It is a useful starting point to explore what this has to offer and identify excerpts and activities that might be used in different ways and for different purposes.

  2. SELECTION
    This is a rich resource covering a wide range of issues and examples of practice. It is useful to take note of specific assets (video clips or activities) that may be used at different times and for different purposes.

  3. VIDEO INSERTS
    One use of this resource is to tag or download video clips which can then be used to illustrate a PowerPoint, or other forms of presentation.

  4. WORKSHOP ACTIVITY
    There are numerous examples here of activities and tools that you can use for professional development as a whole staff, as a group of staff or as a School Improvement Team.  These may be used for a short session, say for an hour, or integrated into a longer, half day, or full day session.

  5. STRUCTURED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
    It is worthwhile to consider how to plan a sequence of activities, taking staff through a process of a developing discussion on purposes, strategies, planning and embedding SSE, or preparing for ESR.  This resource offers a number of building blocks that can be used flexibly to create different kinds of sessions of varying lengths and serving different purposes.

 

What does interactive mean?

This resource is designed to encourage interactivity in terms of what happens between people when they discuss ideas, share experiences, and reflect on ways in which they can improve their practice. In other words the interaction is less about the interface with technology than the face-to-face exchanges which this resource is designed to promote.

Drawing on activities, quotes, tools and practical strategies contained here our hope is that schools, REOs, school sponsoring bodies and other school-friendly agencies will create opportunities for schools staff to critically evaluate their own and others' practice and become more confident in their conduct of SSE and in preparation for ESR.
