I think self-evaluation is very powerful and, compared to a lot of inspections, it can be a lot more effective as a means of taking an organisation forward. However I think it's got to be done objectively and honestly, and I think in the past self-evaluation, if it's been seen as a step towards an inspection is sometimes seen as almost like a school report: you're trying to get the best possible mark. Self-evaluation in my mind is about identifying where are the deficiencies, what needs to be improved, and how do we do this. And it's that understanding within the organisation about what we need to do better, how we do things better that really drives you forward into the future.
