Any savvy Principal will say, " I can't do all of this on my own - that's impossible. So, unless I engage other people, or unless other people are involved, I'm not going to succeed." The interpretation of a distributive perspective that it involves "throwing out the Principal with the proverbial bath water" is completely foolish. The Head - the school Principal - is still critical. If you can imagine a Principal in a school who says, "It's my way - this is how it's going to be", but they distribute responsibility in a very tight way. I think the job has become too difficult. "It's a job too big for one" is one of those phrases that's thrown out there a lot and I think if we don't acknowledge that, either as practitioners or as people who work on leadership development, we're going to create a situation where we find it difficult to get people to take on the role of Head.
