Literacy training enhanced through peer observation

Some years ago, we made reading strategies a focus in our peer lesson observation, noting, for example, how teachers of different classes organise the key ideas of paragraphs, which could be a rather high order skill. As different teachers vary in their teaching methods, we would like to widen our range of techniques through lesson observation. In the last couple of years, we focused on literacy training. The use of games is proven to raise students' attentiveness and degree of participation. Of course not all lessons are on literacy, but we made lessons that teach literacy a higher priority for teachers to observe, particularly for teachers teaching such classes for the first time. We hope that they become more familiar with the games and the patterns before teaching their own classes. We have videotaped some lessons and recorded them on VCDs, so that teachers could watch them in their own time, even during the holiday.
