With the support of I.T., we were able to work on improving our teaching strategies. Some teachers were bound to know more about the computer than others. These teachers were able to demonstrate some interesting lessons taught by using I.T., and did some sharing with the teaching staff on Staff development day. This could be considered to be our seed programme, with about 5 or 6 teachers of different subjects having demonstrated their class teaching. So we came to the understanding that some teaching techniques can be applied across the curriculum, and not confined to individual subjects. This was the first step, and with the spate of changes of the community taking place at the time, teachers knew they needed to be more open and continuously improve their teaching strategies. Therefore, the school also introduced the idea of lesson observation by critical buddies. The idea is that it does not have to be the principal, or senior teachers observing our lessons. Being observed by friends can also enable us to have mutual benefits and learning. The school has made some arrangements for this. For example, we tell teachers they can invite teachers of other subjects, as long as they are comfortable and do not suffer from the pressure. The observer should pay attention to what can be improved and what has been done well. The two teachers can then have a chat to exchange their experience. The next round, the two teachers can swap their roles as observer and the one being observed. We find such arrangements do work for us.
