Well I think professional development in it's best and widest sense involves a way in which individuals, and particularly teachers in the school context, can continue to learn and continue to learn not so much in new knowledge but in terms of new practice. Continue to learn not in a narrow sense of how can I do this better in my classroom, but how I can learn to make the class, the school a part of the wider community. So I would like to see professional development in it's very broadest sense. Now obviously there is a danger that if we conceive of it too widely that it becomes very diffused, that in one sense every activity is professional development, so there needs to be a balance within which we can say some activities in some sequenced sort of way which leads to a greater enhancement of competence a greater sense of empowerment is what I would see as professional development.
