Schools should audit all areas of their provision on a systematic basis. They should scan across all the QI's perhaps once a year, or so, and ensure that all areas of the school are kept under regular scrutiny. However, they will also be taking a closer look at specific areas. Some of this will be done as part of a programme of regular audit. Some areas, for instance, attainment and learning and teaching, however, you will keep under scrutiny every single year. They are central to what goes on in a school and you couldn't leave them for a year or two before you looked at them again. One of the best ways of auditing is to build it into the regular routines of school life. That means looking at meetings that you are holding anyway; looking at pupils work as a matter of course during the course of the year; looking at the records you have of their attainment. Now, it's important that this isn't just done on an ad-hoc basis. It should be done carefully and systematically and overtly keeping the illustrations of the quality indicators in mind. But, by doing it this way you can gradually build up your evidence base instead of having to set aside long stretches of time at specific times of the year. It helps you use time effectively and it helps you make sure that your evaluations are based on robust sources of evidence.
